Lubec, ME and Superlatives

West Quoddy House Lighthouse

There are several places we could have chosen to cross into Canada from Maine. As superlatives nerds, we chose Lubec, ME because it’s the easternmost town in the continental US. OK, it’s also a cute little coastal city with shops, restaurants and a great hardware store. Also the easternmost campground, Sunset Point RV Park, which happens to be a great place to spend a couple days of R&R after the reunion festivities. Just outside of town is the West Quoddy Lighthouse, the easternmost point in the continental US.

Sunset from camp

For our fellow superlatives nerds, or the simply curious, here are are some of our other visits over the years (and I’ll note that, because of the nature of our travels, we’re qualifying ‘superlative places’ to include only those that you can drive to). In the lower 48, Key West is the southernmost point, and Cape Blanco, OR is the westernmost. Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay, AK is the northernmost point in North America, Anchor Bay, AK is the farthest west, and Cape Spear, Newfoundland is as far east as you can go. The town of Tuktoyaktuk, NWT is the northernmost point in Canada, Ontario’s Peelee National Park the southernmost point, and the AK/Yukon border is the westernmost (not a point, actually, but a line).

One that is arguably missing is the Northwest Angle considered to be the northernmost point in the lower 48. It’s a peninsula in Lake of the Woods, and it is completely surrounded by Canada. You can drive there through Canada, fly or boat in. We did visit Lake of the Woods while in Ontario, acknowledging it’s significance, however as that was early in our travels our nerdness had not fully developed and we let it slip out of our hands.

For anyone interested in one more useless superlative fun fact, technically the easternmost point in North America is in Alaska, not Maine. The Aleutian islands cross the date line, so some of them are as far east as one can be. Can’t drive there, though.
